Every car that meets the necessary prerequisites to be featured on Daily Turismo is an interesting car…but sometimes they are cars that I don’t want to own. This next car fits into that category of the rare stuff that could find a home in my garage…and trust me, my garage is a strange place. It current extends into the public street and involves several Buick station wagons that I didn’t seek, but they came to me — anyway, if I were to add to my collection of vintage fun cars, something with a Chevy 350 V8 and headers and styling like this would be top of the list. Short Beetle Pan: 1966 Volkaro Kit Car

Tipper Rock On sent this car in almost a month ago, and I’d mostly forgotten about it until I stumbled onto it in one of my late night peanut butter whiskey fueled search fests — and (this might be the Screwball talking) but I want this thing. Does it have an engine — naw! You can source your own. But it is a Volkaro, which is the Ferrari Dino-ish looking kit car from the twisted mind of some wannabe Bruce Myers. There isn’t much info available on the web when you search for Volkaro (DT’s article shows up 4th in the listings when you put the term “VOLKARO” into duckduckgo, for what it’s worth) but there is probably some guy living in the high desert that can tell you all about the genesis of the Volkaro and who built them and…but he doesn’t have the internet because he is afraid of getting COVID or the CIA in his computer. Anyway…you don’t need to know the history of Volkaro to know that you still should buy this 1966 Volkaro kit car offered for $2500 in Desert Hot Springs, CA via craigslist.

This might sound like a strange thing to say, but I’m going to say it anyway; This isn’t a bad looking Beetle based Bugatti kit car. I know that sounds crazy, but this thing isn’t bad looking, not just for a kit car, but for any car. I wouldn’t put it in the automotive hall of fame and I certainly want a better shot of the rear end…but for 50 Benjamins, this isn’t bad at all. Sometimes I see a car and think “what am I going to say/write about this next car?” It can take some time to get properly motivated to say something funny, pithy, or not-funny. But this next car, I knew instantly. It had a face that was instantly recognizable. It’s not a Dodge, it’s a Doge, or possibly Bob the minion. Racecar Backwards Is Mirage: 1970ish Manta Mirage

There are only a handful of cars out there that’ll make a Porsche 356 look “large” in a photo, but a Manta Mirage is one of them. Never heard of it? Yeah, you are certainly in the majority of people, but don’t fret, because here at DT we are obsessed with everything Manta and will post each one that we find. Why? Because they are all questionably built kit cars with styling based on a McLaren race car and are almost all powered by big V8s and hit the scales around 1900 lbs. I’m no expert on selling cars…but I do know a thing or two, and one of them is that you should never stage your car to look like you’ve just dug it out from a grave. If you did unearth this thing in your yard, maybe consider pushing/pulling it a few feet into fresh dirt before taking pictures with your dirty thumbnail obscuring the ancient license plate…oh, wait, there is an old bench seat sitting next to a tarp that’ll do. No Ordinary Kit: 1971 Blakely Bernardi

This next car might look like something designed in England just after WWII, but it is actually a kit body and frame built in Blakely Auto Works Princeton, WI in the 1980s. The Blakely Beranardi was expensive when new — a fully assembled version sold for almost $22k, or about the same as a new Corvette. But if you wanted a neo-classic designed kit car vaguely reminiscent of an MG TD that uses a Ford Pinto, Mercury Bobcat or Mustang II donor car…you could do worse. Somehow the seller of this next managed to get a pre-smog 1971 title and is offering this car for a decent price. Find this 1971 Blakely Bernardi offered for $11,000 in Carson, CA via craigslist.

Some Assembly Required: 1959 Falcon Caribbean

If you see this next car and get a primordial tingling of deja vu…you might be right, because we’ve featured this car before…and not just another Falcon Caribbean kit car, but this exact Falcon Caribbean was featured in a “what am I?” post in 2014. It is, unfortunately, still in the same semi-finished state as before and the Ford Anglia chassis (probably not the Austin 7 as specified by the seller) is not entirely sorted under the fiberglass body. Get it for cheap, store it, don’t actually do anything to it, and then sell for the same price a few years later. Sounds like a recipe for success.
