If you see a 90s vintage BMW 5-series with a 30i suffix on the badge you might assume it has one of BMW’s sweet sounding 3ish liter inline sixes…but you’d be wrong. For the E34 generation of BMW’s 5-series they started with the 530i with a M30 inline-6 in 1988, but in 1992 they changed over to a 3.0 liter M60 V8. That’s right in 1992 you could get a 535i with a inline-6 making 208 horsepower and 225 ft-lbs of torque or a 530i with a V8 making 215 horsepower and 214 ft-lbs of torque. The M60B30 was a small displacement version of the M60B40 found in the 540i and with a 3.31inch bore and 2.66 inch stroke and 10.5:1 compression ratio it should been capable of making lots of power, but it was under cammed and held back from the factory with a 6500 rpm rev limiter. Here is what you need to do –take the engine apart, coat every rotating component with space age coatings and get a custom ground cam (or four) and some fancy valve springs — open the exhaust and revv it to 8900 rpm. Boom — screaming V8 that nobody else has — and today’s example is one of the few 5-speed equipped 530is I’ve ever seen. If you were to compare automotive makers to soda companies you might be tempted to compare the legendary Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company the something like Snapple. But if Coke is GM and Pepsi is Ford, then Snapple is Dodge…so you’ve got to dig deeper because Studebaker is closer in rarity to Reed’s Ginger Brew. A few months back we featured a cheap Volvo 240 sedan (244) that had a small block V8 attached to a 3-speed manual gearbox. It wasn’t a bad build, but strange that the Muncie 3-speed would have been selected as the transmission, but who cares, it was cheap. A few months later and it is for sale at a new place a few hundred miles away with new shoes and for more than double the earlier price. I have to agree with JB’s sentiments and the reason this 428 V8 equipped beast is cheap is because it has 4-doors, but that makes it very family friendly and ready to be your semi-daily driver. I know. Another V8 powered Volvo…how cliché. But this one is special. It has a ginormous turbocharger with an intake sized like something from an apache helicopter that pushes cubic yards of air into the 5.3 liter iron block (probably an LM7 if I was to guess) with MegaSquirt standalone fuel injection to make a tire obliterating 745 horsepower on the dyno. Thankfully this thing is shifted with an Aisin AR-5 manual gearbox that probably came from a Chevy Colorado or Pontiac Solstice and isn’t exactly rated for this level of murderous torque…but people tend to overestimate the required ruggedness of their transmissions and if you shift it nicely it will probably survive the repeated 60-100mph sprints that this thing is built for. We’ve never featured a 2nd generation Cadillac CTS-V on DT before (plenty of 1st gen versions) and not for lack of want. The 556 horsepower supercharged 6.2 liter LSA V8 pushes the porky 4-door to a world record for a sedan 7:59 at the Nürburgring Nordschleife (at least until it was beat by the Porsche Panamera Turbo a few months later.) But it matters not, because today we’ve got one in DT price range — nevermind the salvage title, gas station photos, lien title, and lack of interior/engine pics.
