Ugly Duckling: 1972 Porsche 914 V8

The Porsche 914 is one of those classics that needs no introductions, but today’s example is a bit of an eyesore. Long gone is the original Beetlesque flat-4 and in its place is a small block Chevy pushing lots of torques and ponies from 383 cubic inches (that’s American for many liters, almost 4 more bottles of Pepsi compared to the original engine if my math is right). The exterior is a mélange of watercolors in what appears to be a faded Gulf paint scheme, but the thing that sells this car is the period correct Minilite style wheels with thick rubber. You won’t be invited back to the local Concours d’Fanciness, but you will be asked to represent at your local Stunz ‘n Burnouts group. If indeed your maths are korrekt, this is at least a nine liter Chebby engine.
Pedantry aside, how is it possible to have a “5spd Mitsubishi trans, built Porsche transaxle” – anyone care to enlighten me?
Also, I dig the livery. This is a no fu**s given Porsche. As 914 values ascend into low Earth orbit mutts like this one will become rare.
I dig the styling, livery, the blue tartan, Shelby wheels, v8. At this price I’d say it’s a steal. Not sure about the Mitsubishi stuff, that’s weird for sure.
I think I figured out the “5spd Mitsubishi trans, built Porsche transaxleâ€
I went looking for what Mitsubishi had a longitudinal front drive configuration and came up with nothing.
What this has , and from the photos of the previous listing show, is a cable shifter that might have been in a Mitsubishi. Given the lack of a definition of a “built†transmission ( as opposed to a sack of parts? ) I would assume that the transmission in this is still the plain old 901 that could reliably handle about a third of the torque of that engine.

See comments – I Iooked at buying the car and drove it. Let’s say it had a few issues. Given this guys has added 10k to the ask, it better have had a lot of sorting. I’m sure it hasn’t….
You’re probably right. I remember when this was originally listed as well.
My neighbor’s 427 SCB 1970’s Targa is the best track day V8 Porsche swap I’ve ever seen, I was trying to trade my grand national for it for years but he never went for it – I bet with GN prices what they are now, he wishes he had.

Huh?
I’m super curious about the Mitsubishi transmission. A stroker SBC and a Porsche 901 transmission is a really bad idea.
If it works it might be worth the extra money.
Still love that interior!
The slope nose kit was by Chalon. With the right paint job (and good body work/properly adjusted gaps), I thought it made the 914 look much better.
I don’t feel the same way about the svoopy doopy spoiler.
I kinda dig the tartan seats, though.
And like everyone else, I’m wondering what how the heck the a 5 speed works with a Porsche transaxle. And if that transaxle is actually beefy, or just has an interesting coat of paint on it… (like the rest of the car).

Actually the whole car bodywork was custom fabricated in Mexico…I spoke with the owner at length. It has a really interesting history. I hate the way it looks now.
