The W114/W115 Mercedes chassis was marketed as the “New Generation Models” when released in 1968, but became known colloquially for its model year as the Strich Acht for /8 or stroke eight. The W114/5 chassis was only available with 4 and 6 cylinder engines, but to live up to its nickname, this one has been given a proper V8 transplant. The Mercedes-Benz 250C was a 2-door coupe version of the early E-Class sized sedan (well before Mercedes used the designation E-Class). It was however, a nicely equipped car for the time and today will drive nicely and feel more like a modern car than most contemporary cars from Asia or America. The biggest complaint you may have is that the 2.8 liter M130 inline-6 only puts out 150 SAE gross horsepower and will feel pokey compared to modern 4-banger equipped economy cars.
The seller of this 250C fixed any power complaints by installing a 5.0 liter Ford 302 V8 into the spot normally reserved for an I-6. The V8 is equipped with all sorts of aftermarket parts, intake, exhaust, and a roller camshaft – probably making in the range of 300 horsepower (give or take). Mated to a C4 automatic transmission this car makes a good sleeper street/strip car and cruiser.
The interior is in good shape for such a low price hot-rod, and while the B&M shifter looks well installed, it does look slightly out of place in the ’72 Mercedes. The build quality on one of these sleepers is essential to future value as a cobbled up amateur job is never desired, but the small sign on the side of this 250C identifies it as related to Clifton Mercedes Sales/Service, an independent Mercedes repair shop. If this car belongs to the owner or a Mercedes mechanic, it could very well be well done.
