5k: Discount Big Block: 1970 Ford Galaxie XL 429 ThunderJet

Finding a two door American car with a big block V8 for cheap is one of the things that puts a smile on my face.  Far too many big American coupes are traded between wealthy folks via Barrett Jackson or Mecum auctions…but not today!  Find this 1970 Ford Galaxie XL 429 ThunderJet offered for $7,500 in Ocean County, NJ via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

The Galaxie had been Ford’s top end full sized offering starting back in 1958, but by the introduction of the 4th generation platform in 1969 it had been made redundant by the LTD.  Regardless, the Galaxie lived for a few more years and was finally put to bed in 1974.

Under the gigantic hood is a 429 cubic inch (7.0 liter) ThunderJet V8 rated at 360 horespower and 480 ft-lbs of torque.  The ThunderJet is a big monstrous piece of iron that weighs as much as a house and puts out enough torque to rotate the earth. Finding one in a Mustang equals instant six figure auction prices, but for some reason the versions found in Galaxies, Thunderbirds and other big beasts aren’t that pricey.

The interior of this Galaxie is in good shape…great shape when you consider the asking price.  The front bench seat means this porker can carry six people around with ease and class.
