Seller Submission: 1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 14
The Type 14 Karmann Ghia was sold from 1955-1974 using VW Beetle Type 1
chassis/engine, styling by Luigi Segre of Carrozzeria Ghia and a hand built body by German
coach-builder Karmann. Today’s Type 14 comes as a seller submission from DT reader Tim who writes: Last night I bought a 73 914 with a 2.4 4 , pretty sick old man, eh? Find this 1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 14 offered for $12,000 in Capitola, CA via craigslist.
This Type 14 Ghia looks mean sitting lowered on Centerline style wheels and without bumpers. It is hard to tell that this was a “barn” find 14 months ago when the current owner picked it up, because it looks ready to run with classic aircooled machines today.
Powering this classic is a 1835cc engine that was rebuilt less than 1000 miles ago by the best machinist in Santa Cruz County. Shifting is accomplish with a short shifter attached to a freeway flyer 4-speed manual, and braking is done with 4-wheel discs.

Beautiful. Amazing how much better they look when you take off the bumpers…
