RIP George Barris: 1960 Mercury Comet Batmobile

Legendary car customizer and Batmobile builder George Barris passed on to the great junkyard in the sky yesterday, at the age of 89.  He was born in Chicago in 1925, but spent his adult years in the SoCal area working on many movie cars including the Munster Coach, 1967 Batmobile,  KITT, etc.  His imprint on the world of custom cars was huge, so in his honor we are featuring this 1960 Mercury Comet Batmobile offered for $6,000 in Santa Rosa, CA via craigslist. Tip from Kaibeezy.

This isn’t a wild custom like Barris’ 1960s Batmobile, which was built on the one-off Lincoln Futura concept car that was originally assembled by Ghia in the 1950s.  In fact, the only thing that makes this car a Batmobile are the floormats, but the black paint and fantastic Comet tail fins help sell the effect.

Under the hood is a 144 cubic inch Ford inline-6 mated to a 2-speed automatic gearbox, so you will have a hard time catching the Joker the next time he robs Gotham Federal Credit Union.
