Red Sun Rise: 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4
The Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 was a 4-wheel-drive supercoupe that (when new) competed with the likes of Toyota’s Supra, Porsche’s 911 993, and Acura NSX. It was a triumph of technology over temerity in 1994, but 20 years later the Supra/911/NSX have appreciated into the climate controlled garages of the elite, while the 3000GTs are still roaming pool hall parking lots looking for a good time. Find this 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 offered for $13,900 in Fremont, CA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.
Perhaps the comparison the 933/Supra/NSX was a bit unfair, because the 3000GT was closer in price and function to the 300ZX and Mazda FD RX-7 — and those two cars trade in a similar price range as the VR4.
Under the hood is a technological tour-de-force for 1994 — the 6G72 V6
was turbocharged and intercooled from the factory to produce 300
horespower and 315 ft-lbs of torque. Although the seller does describe this car as “basically all stock” I do spy a cold air intake…not that there is anything wrong with that.
The other item that wasn’t available at the dealer is a set of TEIN lowering springs, which should make it a bit more fun to drive and won’t kill value for resale. This is one of the lower mile VR4s you’ll find around, with only 49k miles on the odometer and perfect paint, perfect interior.
