Mid Week Match-Up: Targa California Car
It is Wednesday so that means another time for a Mid Week Match-Up (TM)! Last we we found the best car to stick it to the man on tax day, but the number of suggestions paled in comparison to the previous week’s family car for Gianni feature. Anyway, tomorrow marks the starting gun of the 2015 Targa California, so for the feature today we are looking for the best cars for a Targa event — no price limit.
Now in its 7th year, the Targa California (April 23-25, 2015) is a vintage rally non-timed event held on public roads in the Central Coast California and includes
special visits to car collections, a race track tour, and more. If you asked me to pic the perfect Targa car, it would be this 1986 Porsche 911 that has been modified to look like a 73 RS. Find it here on eBay currently bidding for $40,100 reserve-not-met with $75,000 buy-it-now located in Mission Hills, CA.
For full disclosure, this car is offered by one of DT’s early readers, tippers, submitter, and all around car guy Tamas, who send me an email saying that this very car will be leading the pack for this years Targa California. What could be better than a 911 with the looks of the early car but the chassis, suspension, and engine of a later example.
What would you take to a rally event? Comments below.
It would have to be the remarkable 1931 Invicta S Type.

So if there is no price limit, I'm going in this ex-works Lancia Delta S4 for sale at a dealer in Italy:

To all you folks emailing me screaming about, "It's too new!" I say Rules Are For Sissies! Or, just wait another 8 years and figure out some way around the law; "Gee Occifer, I didn't know it wasn't street legal." Your pick. Either way, I'm sure they'd let me run the M4S (heh heh). If they won't let me drive my little 4-banger, then I'd pick the C3…NOT a 'Vette, you nutbreads!

In a perfect world? The Napier-Railton.
One of the ERAs.
Drop R4D off in my driveway and you can have a testicle. Or two.
Nice call on the Napier-Railton.
Got a little project bubbling along at a slow pace inspired by that one, got most of the mechanicals and a pile of frame templates and jigs I've fabricated but it's not in one piece yet.
Plan is to get it in running-frame form then see if I can get some local art/engineering-school student interested in doing the bodywork design for – uh, the kind of peanuts I can afford.

Oh, and no, while the frame design's just about got room for a Lion I'm not raiding my daughter's college fund to pay for one, so the plan right now is an early-postwar Cadillac V8.
I'd love to find 50-75 buyers for an updated (beefed-up bottom end and modern combustion chamber/ports) Lion, and come up with the rest of the money to fund the tooling, but I can't see that happening in my lifetime.

Mrkwong, That was my answer as soon as I read the question. Just a beautiful car from every angle.

Yeah, third and fourth on my list were the LSR V12 Delage and a nice '26-27 Fronty-Ford.
Great minds think alike 😉
Heck, a couple week ago when the Model T Speedster showed up on DT, I was toying with buying it as a Targa and race car, and my wife was encouraging me by suggesting which of my friends might want to go in with me and buy a half-share.
At that price I might have gone in for half for road-rally purposes, not too interested in tracking something like that, but I'm short on storage and increasingly committed to Lemons these days.

My lovely Alfa GTV. It's not exotic but it's all I want.
XK120 FHC, no OTS. Hell, either. Damnit, need to get my father to get his operational!

You guys are so lucky to have such an event. We have nothing like it up here in WA. Looks like a bunch of fun with fellow petrolheads.
