Endangered Species: 1997 Subaru Legacy GT

I don’t mean to throw shade at the reliability of the 2nd generation BD (sedan) BG (stepped roof wagon) BK (wagon) Legacy, but seriously, when was the last time you saw one of these on the road. Maybe it isn’t reliability of the drivetrain, but ruggedness of the chassis, but these have completely disappeared from the roads in the USA. I’m actually happy to see this one and I’d love to see it driving down the road in my neighborhood. Find this 1997 Subaru Legacy GT offered for $3,850 in Gardenerville, NV via craigslist.

If you concentrate hard enough on the picture of the engine, you can hear the new head gasket developing a leak.
had a 96 wagon in their ubiquitous maroon red color. least supportive front seats of any car i have ever had. i was uncomfortable in it during a 10 min test drive.she liked it. then started to complain. I mounted an 84 mazda 626 multiway manual adj seat on adapter plates onto the subie seat slide rails. made it driveable for me. . rear wheel bearing seals were our weak point. went thru 3 bearings in 50k. that was enough “love” for me. it’s what makes a subaru a subaru.
I had a mint ’99 Legacy wagon in poverty Brighton spec. The 2.2 doesn’t eat head gaskets but it also doesn’t make any noticeable herspers. Sold it after noticing developing oil leaks that I didn’t want to address. Sadly, it’s perhaps the perfect wagon shape and size let down by a fairly primitive engine. I don’t know why anyone would’ve chosen a sedan over the wagon.

I’ve owned 6 STi Imprezas and 1 tuned WRX wagon and only the wagon had head gasket issues and that was at around 167k miles.
Three of the STis I drove over 100k miles in each as daily drivers.
I’ve not owned a Legacy, but always admired their more grown up image.
I think the head gasket thing on the boxer engine is a little overplayed, but that’s okay with me, it means that the prices keep that little bit lower!
