Converse V8 Swap: 1993 Volvo 940 Wagon

Paul Newman’s Volvo 960 V8 Wagon pops up for sale every few years at some astronomical asking price with the likes of Wayne Carini waxing nostalgic about it…but if you want a Converse Engineering V8 swapped Volvo, you don’t need to be a trust fund kid, you just need patience and a good eye for a deal.  Find this 1993 Volvo 940 Wagon here on eBay bidding for $710 reserve-not-met with 5 days to go, located in Woodstock Valley, CT.  Tip from Scot.

The trick to pulling off a great sleeper is that the car can’t have too many external clues that you’ve got something brewing under the hood…and this car pulls it off perfectly.  The wheels might be a bit on the big/sporty side, but they don’t look outlandish and won’t get a second glance from anyone…unless they are moving considerably faster than the pavement — somebody might notice the smoke.

Producing the glorious ability to chew anybody’s ass from 20 to 100 is Ford 5.0 liter pushrod V8 that should be good for anything from 225 to 300 horsepower depending on the internal build characteristics.  I’d add a puffer.

The builder of this 980 opted to use an automatic gearbox, which will slow down the fun a bit, but it should make for a better cross country family hauler.  The interior looks good for the seller’s stated 245,000 miles, but it is hard to tell from the single interior photo.
