5k: VR4eva: 1991 Mitsubishi Galant VR4
Rally-inspired technology was as much of a buzzword in the ’80s and ’90s as Nurburgring-developed suspension is today. Yet the principle is the same. Who among us doesn’t want to play racecar in a family sedan? Ergo, the latest Porsche Panamera and the white wonder you’re looking at today are only differentiated by their price tag. Yep, that’s the only difference. Find this 1991 Mitsubishi Galant VR4 offered for $4,995 in Milwaukie, OR via Craigslist.
Powered by a 4G63, this turbocharged AWD sedan fulfilled homologation requirements before the Evo hill-jumped its way onto the rally scene. Later iterations got the 3000GT‘s turbo V6 and as much as 276 horsepower. This VR4 has just 195 horsepower, but only 3,250 pounds to move around instead of the 3000GT’s 3,800.
This Galant has enough ridges, gills, and slats to make a Pontiac Bonneville blush. The color doesn’t do it any favors either. White with white aftermarket wheels, this Galant looks about as white as a polar bear drinking Starbucks at a Taylor Swift concert. Your white supremacist neighbors would approve. Other apparent mods (strut tower bar, air filter, A-pillar gauge) can be easily reverted back to stock in case you’re the president of the Galant Preservation Society. That would be a small society indeed, as this Galant is number 132 of 2000.
The Oregon-based listing for this VR4 provides 26 strangely cropped pictures and even a video brought to you by a charmingly feminine robot. One picture reveals 265,000 miles on the odometer, a figure not reflected by the relatively unworn seats, dash, and touchpoints. Between the fine hides of the leather seats lies this turbo sedan’s crown jewel: a shifter. Like a king clutching a scepter, the driver of this VR4 holds command of five gears. Rule justly, sovereign Galant. A legion of Talons and Eclipses awaits your orders.

On what planet does total loss = clean title?
Carfax report, from the dealership's own website.
…yes I realize not all total loss vehicles receive a branded title. I'm just commenting in general about how ridiculous that is, in my opinion.
I would love to see a side-by-side comparison between this and a Dodge Spirit R/T of the same year. Do the 0-60 and quarter mile races and then race them around a twisty track. Let's throw a SHO in there for fun, too.
Interesting how the Stealth and 3000GT were identical, along with the identical Eclipse and Laser, but this Galant and the Spirit were developed completely independently and seem to fill about the same niche. You could consider the Spirit the final, most refined K-Car, while the Galant was a newer platform.
refined, and k-car, hmmm
Ok, that's a fair hit.
I daily drove 3 of these. Stupid fast for cheap. Daily driving a heavy modified 4G63T makes men out of boy mechanics.
Scab-handed, empty-walleted men that talk to themselves about fuel maps because nobody cares.
These men you speak of would get together with each other but their cars are never running well enough to go to the parts store AND a friends house.
