5k: Slow And Steady: 1997 Mercedes-Benz E300 Diesel W210
The W210 chassis Mercedes-Benz E-Class was built from 1995 to 2003 and earns the distinction as being the last Mercedes to be developed before the unfortunate Daimler-Benz merger era that traded reliability and long term product durability for short term bottom line driven marketing tricks. Find this 1997 Mercedes-Benz E300 Diesel W210 for sale in Dallas, TX currently bidding for $3,050 reserve-not-met with a buy-it-now of $5,499 with 3 days to go.
This 1997 E300 diesel is offered with a relatively low 160k miles on the odometer; relative to the scores of diesel powered Benz that drive around with 400k+ miles on the clock. This one looks in good shape and only needs a good headlight polishing to look new.
The E300 diesel is powered by an OM606 naturally aspirated 3.0 liter inline-6 diesel. The OM606 makes 134 hp and 155 ft-lbs of torque without the additional benefit of a turbo and returns 30 mpg highway to its pilot.

Not fast but for a very comfortable commute at about 33mpg, you can;t go wrong. At 160K mikes, the engine is almost broken in.
They always say "This car will last longer than you can stand to drive it." I agree.
While you are correct about it being the last of the pre-merger cars, it was already a big step down in engineering and reliability from the w124 (and the w123 without saying), so I suppose the reliability angle is all relative. With that said, I have almost 90k on a w211 with little more than brakes and fluid changes, so who knows………..
