5k: Mafia Style: 1974 Ford LTD Brougham
The Ford LTD was part of Ford’s 1968-1978 full size lineup that included a few Mercurys (Marquis, Monterey, Colony Park) and Ford’s Custom, Galaxie and Country Squire. All told, Ford sold almost 8 million of this generation of full sized machine making it Ford’s second best selling platform of all time (just behind the Model T). Find this 1974 Ford LTD Brougham for sale in Salt Lake City, UT for $4,300 via craigslist.
This monster sized goldenrod American beast is one of those cars that is so horrible, so slow, and so ridiculous…that it is cool. From the horribly underpowered 460 cubic inch (7.5 liter) V8 making only 170 horsepower, to the moon lander spec shock absorbers this thing just screams 1974!
Typically these land yachts can be found propped up on 4 cinder blocks or steel wheels at your local junkyard, but this one is in impeccable condition. The inside looks great in the single picture provided – almost looks like a Ford catalog photo from 1974.

My alcoholic neighbor across the street had one of these when I was growing up. He got really drunk one night and drove it through our yard, our neighbor's yard, their neighbor's yard and finally got stuck about 5 houses down. He continued gunning it, getting it hopelessly buried, until the police finally arrived.
He used the propane lamp in his front lawn as a navigational beacon on his way back from the bar each night. Turns out he honed in on the wrong one that particular evening.
Had this exact same barge with the exact same color combo only in a 2 door hardtop. Came with tires from that well known manufacturer that was sued because the tread would separate from the tire casing…..happened to me.
I disagree that the car was underpowered, because I owned a 1974 2 door coupe. It ran very well.
