5k: 1971 SAAB 95 Wagon

The SAAB 95 (not the 9-5!) was a 7 seat, 2-door wagon from Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget and reminds us of the days when SAAB designed cars that looked like aerodynamic rocket ships!  This 1971 SAAB 95 Wagon with V4 engine is for sale in Costa Mesa, CA for $6200 via craigslist.

The photos of the car aren’t that good but we get a nice closeup of the front hood (green paint looks great! – we hope it is original) and a sweet Viking Rallye plaque.

The SAAB 95 is powered by a V4 engine taken from the Ford Taunus and its the same 1.4 liter 55 horsepower 95 ft-lbs of torque engine that powers the 96 and Sonett.  It puts that power to the front wheels via a 4 speed manual transmission and is the reason these cars are better known for Rallye than for anything on the tarmac – the front wheels help pull the car around in low traction environments.

This 95 looks stock on the inside and seems to be in good shape – at least we don’t see any random wires hanging down under the dash or wooly mammoth seat covers.  The 6th and 7th passengers sit facing rearward, and this “way back” area would be the best place to be a passenger during a snow storm.

Whoa – look at those tail lights – this thing is awesome!  It would definitely be worth a trip to the OC for anyone looking for a vintage SAAB.
