5k: 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220se Coupe -4spd
We’ve talked about how much we love classic Mercedes – and this isn’t just because the sedan examples are so cheap today – we also like the coupes…when they are cheap…like this 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220SE for sale in San Fernando, Ca for $5300 via craigslist.
Ok – this car really isn’t ready to be driven every day – and its in serious need of restoration – but from a quick market scan it seems that W111 coupes with 4-spd manuals in good running condition go for something north of $15k – so this seems to be the best way to get into one at daily turismo cash range.
The W111 coupes were produced from 1961 to 1971 and came with inline 6 engines – this one with a 2.2 liter 120 horsepower engine that won’t wow anyone with its ‘street presence’ but it’ll get the job done. The main reason to own one of these isn’t to do crazy burn outs on Hollywood Blvd, or set a new best time on Mulholland drive…its to cruise down Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and enjoy the time spend in a comfortable and beautiful classic.
This one will need some attention in the paint department as well as rust repair – but the owner claims the engine starts and runs – so really its a cut above a lot of the other “resto” projects you may find and at $5300 its probably worth the price of a replacement for that sweet curved rear glass.
