Yummy NUMMI: 1987 Chevrolet Nova Hatchback

For 4 generations and 17 years the Chevrolet Nova was a decent sized front-engine rear-wheel-drive economy car from GM. It was called compact, but by today’s standards it was pretty big and by the 1979 it was powered by big gas guzzling V8s and Chevrolet decided to discontinue the model. But it was with some shock when the Nova name was reincarnated with a rebadged version of the AE82 Toyota Corolla for the 1985 model year. Today we’ve got a super love mile version of the 80s Nova built in at the NUMMI plant in Fremont, CA (which is now a Tesla gigafactory) offered for a reasonable price. Find this 1987 Chevrolet Nova Hatchback offered for $5,850 in Elk Grove, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

NUMMI built in Fremont, California USA as a joint venture between Toyota & General Motors using Toyota assembly methods and, primarily, Toyota Corolla parts. The factory where this Nova was assembled was utilized for GM multi-line assembly (GM build code “Zâ€) from 1962 to 1982, NUMMI assembly from 1984 to 2011 (Chevrolet Nova, GEO models, Toyota Corolla and Toyota Tacoma) and Tesla from 2011 onwards. Much history in this rare car’s DNA…

Forget the pricing “guides†as they do not address the outstanding condition of this car nor the documented low miles or solid Toyota drivetrain and build quality. Try and find another like this one anywhere in the USA…

How hard could it be to get a stick swapped in there?
I’m sure that you could go to the wrecking yard and get all the parts that you need to do the swap, but will that make the car any more fun to drive? You will still have kids on bicycles ringing their bells for you to get out of the way.
It does have 4 whole cylinders. There must be something that could be done. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
How about getting a whole 20 valve 4A-GE and its transaxle out of a JDM Corolla?
Also… are there bicycles in Forza?
My Dad had the toyota version of this. We traded it in w/ 165K miles. It was the 2nd of many toyotas he and my mom bought….. I drove the ever lovin’ p!ss out of this car, delivering pizzas for dominos back in the day, and hauled my stuff to and from college. Great car….
There was a ‘This American Life’ about the NUMMI plant. Toyota helped create a really successful manufacturing plant that people loved working at, handed it off to GM, who shut it down basically because they were idiots. https://www.thisamericanlife.org/561/nummi-2015
