What Am I? Beep Beep
Welcome to another edition of DT’s cure for the Monday morning blues — What Am I? We
find a random picture of a car and you get to guess what it is. Last week’s Winnebago Rialta was quickly solved by Fleetwood T. Brougham after he recognized the VW Eurovan roots. That one was too easy, so lets start with a picture that is a little more cropped.
What am I? Comments below.
This puzzle was instantly solved by DT reader Adam Fay, who pointed out that is a 1986 Subaru XT currently bidding for $2,125 here on eBay with 3 days to go. The XT was a crazy predecessor to the SVX and featured a crazy aerodynamic exterior and fantastic aircraft inspired interior. It is probably a terrible car to drive, but fantastic to look at if you are into 80s wedge shapes (I am!).

Subaru XT FTW!
Nice! The French never got any royalties, btw.

jag xe?
Fantastic!
What's new, Kaibeezy? Been missing your presence in the Twisters lately.
i was having a bit of a challenging day that first time, so it was quite a welcome distraction – but they sure do seem to be very popular! – i don't know if we got over 30 comments on a thread more than once or twice, then 300+, wowee
I'm sorry to hear that. I had a similar weekend, yesterday and the days before it – they SUCKED – and, just as you wrote, it was a welcome distraction from the stuff going on.
Yeah, the Twisters have definitely picked up! DT is a really nice way to get your mind off of things, which is why I like cars so much – they don't have a lot to do with the other things going on in my life. The DTers that are mechanics probably don't feel that way so much, or maybe they do!
Another?

That image is the clue, btw.
The face of the honey bee on the Datsun210 honeybee gas miser edition?
Excellent guess, Tom Minch!

But no.
Same visual What Am I…can you name the carmaker based on the image below?

Sorry, let me try posting that again. It should be animated.

And no, the answer is not DeSoto if that's where you were headed with your guess.
DAF
Good guess, w.neff! But no.
Was it Packard for the headlights turning with the wheels?
That would make a good Thursday Twister, Tom Minch; name all of the cars that have headlights that turn with the steering or wheels. Tom's got a good idea there, El Jefe!
Once again, I guarantee that all of you know this one! Another clue;

Kaibeezy for the WIN!!!! And for those of you that may be a little confused (I'm sure you aren't, but still…), the correct answer is not Simon Stalenhag.
Took me a while to get my bearings on that one.

Har har! Also a correct answer, El Jefe, of course. Such fun!
If you're up for one last one, here you go!

Need a clue?
Is this a European, Asian or North American vehicle?
Good question! It's a Euro-NA mix.
Is it a SUV or car?
I like your thinking, Tom! It's a car.
I was thinking how great it was that Subaru made the steering wheel asymmetrical. I can think of a few offset wheels and some with only one spoke. But I can't think of another that has a configuration like the XT's. Can you?
It appears that this one might go unsolved. One last clue; this car was specifically named here on DT within the last four days.
named here in one of 500 comments – only you could be so bold
euro-na i've got, in no particular order
– merkur
– chrysler maserati tc
– amc renault
– vw routan
– saab for a while
– volvo for a while
– opel
– other bits and pieces
hm… na… mexico? – renault alpine? – checking… nope – canadian… nope
i got nothing
Good guesses, Kaibeezy!
Jankel Tempest?
WINNER!!!!!!!! Very nice, w.neff! The Jankel Tempest was the very last entry in the Twister from Sunday, from yours truly. An easy one, right!?!

And check out the Renault R5 turbo for steering wheel (and interior design) whimsy… renault-5.net/version_turbo/renault5_turbo_interieur.jpg

Oh, that's cool! Thanks w.neff! When did the interior switch to a more conventional setup? 1983?
1982

1983+?

With the caveat that I am not a marque expert: in MY 1983 Renault introduced the Turbo 2, a lower cost version with steel body panels and the less dramatic interior. It is the more common model and has the lower photo's interior. The original Turbo (turbo 1) was retained but produced in lower volume through the end of production in 1984/5. I'm not sure if the groovy interior remained identical to the early versions.
Yes, 1983 with the Turbo 2. The Turbo 2 was the cheaper version of the R5 Turbo, using more steel panels from the R5 instead of aluminium like the Turbo 1 and regular R5 interior bits.
Aha! So they went more conservative in '83 then. That's too bad, because the '82 looks super cool.
It was cheaper for them to manufacture after they did the initial homolgation run for rallying.
It always mystifies me when manufacturers do that sort of thing. Why bother with that when you've just been doing the other thing? Maybe there was a difference in layout under the external and internal skin between the '82 and '83 that caused the change? They already had the '82 dash, so why not just keep on rockin' that? The tooling and whatnot was already done and they'd already produced it. In fact, with the main center console, the '83 looks like it's even more complicated to produce. And it, like so many cars today, appears to be intruding massively into the passenger compartment.
I'm not such a big fan of all that. I suppose I'm just used to my V70, but I sat in a C6 S6 the other day that felt like it was trying to poke my eye out and my arm was parallel to my ear when I put it on the armrest. It was like a straightjacket, I tell ya!
The S6 was a gorgeous car though and fun to drive. Still, Audi is not for me. That car has been in the shop so many times that I thought the owner was buying a new car every three months.
