Thursday Twister: Favorite Concept Car
We are throwing the Thursday Twister into the spin cycle today by throwing out the requirement for the subject vehicle to be production and instead are going to focus on the pre-production. The task is simple — name your favorite post 1980 concept car that didn’t go into production.
My choice is the ItalDesign Aztec, which according to Wikipedia is a 1988 concept car by designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, but according to this Hemmings blog article from 2011 as many as 18 may have been built and sold for upwards of $750,000. I dunno…it looks really concepty to me… This Audi 5-cylinder powered all-wheel-drive machine may skirt the limit of what is a concept versus a production car…but it is certainly the best looking automobile to ever wear the Aztec badge.
Did I just break the rules in my example? Sure. But as every good parent has ever said: do as I say, not as I do!
Standard contest rules are as follows:
1. Only one car per comment (be sure to hit the refresh button on your
browser before you post in case someone else has posted since you loaded
the page). Do not nest the replies, just reply to the main post — if
you reply to someone elses comment it should be in reference to his
comment and not another submission.
2. You can post again, but only after someone else posts another car. (Rule 2 Abrogated for the summer.)
3. The contest will end in on Sunday, Aug 16, 2015.
4. One submission per make/model.
5. Each car must be a prototype car, from which no production versions were built.
6. No anonymous submissions — pick a name with the Name/URL dropdown.
Ready….Set…break the rules!!

Because many of the brands throughout the world tend to build closer to what they prototype, I think the 'Mericans may have squandered more opportunities for building some memorable cars. This seems especially true with Cadillac and includes both the Sixteen, Ciel and Elmiraj

Mosler J-10 Sport

You really wish that had gone into production? I'm glad it wasn't 😛
What I really want is for Mosler Automotive to have been more successful. If it took something like this to make it so, I'd be all for it. People like this stuff, even though it isn't necessarily my cup of tea. A stretched Wrangler is exactly what's on the market right now and Mosler proposed one way to go about it long ago. He was and continues to be a thinker who looks outside the box and that's a very good thing in the let's play it safe world of cars these days.
The Twinstar Eldo is another perfect example except they actually made a couple, so I don't see it as a concept (conversion, if you're retentive).

Nissan IDx

I sent an email to Nissan USA after this concept car was introduced, stating that they would have at least one very interested buyer. And I included a loving anecdote about my former car: a '92 Sentra SE-R. The email was never returned and the project was killed due to the lack of a suitable platform ( thetruthaboutcars.com/2015/05/nissan-idx-is-super-dead-but-parts-may-live-on-in-fwd-platform/).
A terrible shame. If only internet car people could shoulder the burden of a company's quarterly targets through our purchasing. But we can't.
Agreed. This one should have happened. BS on Nissan for not making it so. Stupid move.

Ford GT90. I'm not a Ford fanboy by any means but I don't know why they didn't tweak this design to suit consumer taste and produce a few. A Ford supercar. They continue to market that Shelby legacy but never pushed the limits as much as they could. Guess it's easier to keep taking money from Mustang buyers.

Chrysler 300 much!
I believe the Curve is a Michael Mauer design, who worked at Mercedes/Smart, GM/SAAB and is now at Porsche. Some of his designs include the SLK, SL-Class, 9-3 (SportCombi and 04-07 Convertible), Panamera, Cayenne and 991 (is it even possible to redo the 911 and is it fair to get paid for what they've chosen to do?). K2 has a lot of favorites 😉
+1! Probably because I posted so many.
Oops. Sorry. Thought you said they were your faves. Yep. I have a lot of favorites. Because I'm inquisitive and find different elements fascinating. Like women, I like cars that are interesting on a number of levels not just the surface.
Just don't make any of these the Twister.
How anybody could only have one, two or even three favorite concept cars is completely bizarre to me. Maybe if they were blind, dumb or dead. Or just didn't really care all that much about cars. That's not my definition of an enthusiast.

The Jaguar XJ13. If built, Jaguar would have had a car drooled over as much as the GT40 and the Miura. Then, the XJ13 was slated to be the prototype for a road car that eventually became the XJS…imagine a version of this mid-engined car was on the roads instead of the XJS…it would have vaulted Jaguar into competing with Ferrari and Lamborghini design-prestige-wise:

The prettiest one here by far…damn it's cool…
Imagine if it had been made into a road car to replace the XJS. Used ones would probably go for $20-30K now.
Dragged it into Photoshop for a sloppy, quick rendering of a possible road version…..imagine this came out in 75 instead of the XJS…would have competed directly with the Ferrari 308 GTB, and looked nicer.
They could have done a nicer, 308-style version of the Nader-necessary bumpers, but I based the quick rendering on XJS bumpers.
So, plenty of these would be around today, probably in the $20-30K range (more desirable than the styling of the actual XJS that went into production!). Would have been a Ferrari killer for sure, and would presently be one of the greatest affordable exotic mid-engines around for normal guys. I'd hope that the lovely V12 would have more room to breathe in this mid-engine design, and so it would be hopefully be far more reliable than XJS's that went into production….supposedly, given room to breathe, the Jaguar V12 is a lovely, smooth, reliable engine.
What a daydream!

I was barred from posting more, sorry. Had to do something about the pitchfork-n-torch crowd to get them off my doorstep. They were really messing up my azaleas.
How do I put this gently…folks, just because you don't see something listed it doesn't mean that it was "missed". I think it's high time we acknowledge that the level of knowledge possessed by the average DTer (KBZ's point about information access aside) far surpasses the everyday enthusiast. It makes any comment about "I can't believe you guys forgot this one" rather moot. I, for one, will strive to not phrase any future comments in such a manner. The WAI is a perfect example; do not assume (that makes a donkey out of you and I) that your fellow DTer doesn't already know all about what you're talking about. In fact, they often know more than you do and could possibly add to what you already have accumulated, information-wise.
Just an observation and possibly something to cogitate. Two cents out.
PS: The level of member knowledge is why I like DT.
