Reader Ride: MCB Drew’s 1988 BMW M5
Time for another edition of Daily Turismo’s Reader Rides, which is our equivalent of having a prison penpal without the risk of violence. You may have seen this car over at Motoringconbrio when it was first purchased. Drew is the editor, creative force, all around nice guy and BMW enthusiast behind motoringconbrio.com and sent us some photos of his e28 generation 1988 BMW M5.
Year / Make / Model / Trim ? ’88 M5
How long have you owned it? Going on one year
Why did you buy it? It’s an E28 M5. To paraphrase the great Louis Armstrong, if you have to ask, you’ll never know.
What do you use it for (commute, fun, racing…etc)? Weekend driver, family hauler, occasional track car.
Is it stock or modified? If modified, please list some modifications. Note the absence of ungainly diving board protrusions fore and aft. Also moar low.
What was the most memorable day in your car (proposed to wife, 3rd child born in back seat…etc)? Flying out to the seller – who called to tell me he was having second thoughts just as I was boarding the plane – and convincing him to release the car. It was like when I met my father-in-law for the first time and asked him to let me marry his daughter.
What was the most catastrophic failure of parts/components? (Knock on wood) I don’t want to jinx it, but catastrophic failure anxiety is part of E28 M5 ownership. If you can’t stand the heat, get a 535i.
What makes you want to keep owning this car? It’s an E28 M5. If I can keep paying the maintenance bills, I’ll keep owning it.
Will you ever sell it? Life is short and unpredictable, so I’d never say never, but she feels like a keeper. I’d like to settle down with this old girl. I want us to grow old together.
You may have also seen Drew’s car when it was featured with his white E36 M3 sedan when it was featured as a seller submission here, or over on Petrolicious.com where the above photo was stolen from. What a collection!!
Got your own ride and want to share? Send us some pics. You can just free form your words,

Love the Euro bumper look on the E28. Nice car.
