Mid Week Match-Up: Find A Rare Project Car
It is hump day (on a short week), but that still means it is time to play our favorite car matching game, known as Mid Week Match-Up! Today we try and find a classic project for your garage, but we aren’t looking for yet another Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro or VW Beetle — no, we are looking for something rare and inexpensive.
‘Rare is a relative term and so is inexpensive, so lets put it at something with fewer than 1000 units built and less than $5,000 to spend. For my money I’d buy this 1978 Dodge Dreamer Conversion Van-ickup here on eBay bidding for $2,500 reserve-not-met located in Upton, MA.
Plop your submission in the comments below.
How about a Morris Mini Traveler for $3K Cdn (x 0.75 for USD).
Fewer than 1000 built? That's definitely 'rare'.
If we were talking 'fewer than 1000 remaining' I'd propose this but I have no idea how many were built.
Likewise this but I'm sure more than 1000 of these rolled off the lines.
As a one-year-only model this might be around the 1000 number, certainly not many left.
Those are some good finds…if a bit rusty.
These were mostly made for towing a 5er when one didn't want a traditional pickup. Especially since crew cabs weren't as common as they are now. Back seat usually folds down into a bed. However the ones with a door for the back seat are probably more convenient.

This is great. Cheap and will generate conversations everywhere you go.
So rare someone took really good care of it!
Sheesh….figured I could find a Golf Harlequin in your price range (275 produced), but they appear to have some weird cult following…..this one went for $7k.

Cult following = GenXrs priced out of E30 market.
The featured Dodge Dreamer is way cool. I would install a whisper-quiet Honda generator in the back and the quietest auxiliary AC unit I could find for the cab. This way I could take a nap whenever.
Does this count? It looks like Herbie humped Greased Lightning. I would bet you have twice the trunk space up front with the conversion. Not sure why you would round out the look with Fuchs hubcaps.
