Mid Week Match Up: Drift King
It is Wednesday so that means it’s time for another edition of Daily
Turismo’s version of a vaccination from driving a Camry, also
known as Mid Week Match-Up! Last week, we asked readers to find us a car for your ungrateful teenager and received lots of great suggestions. Today we are going to go another direction and ask our readers to find the best car for taking to an amateur drift event…max price $10k.
If you want to go drifting for fun on the weekend without selling the house, everybody says the car to start with is the Nissan 240SX S13/S14 chassis. You could buy a stock 240SX and pump your cash into making it go sideways faster better…but this 1990 Nissan 240SX S13 currently bidding for $5,750 reserve-not-met with 7 days to go in British Columbia, Canada looks like a decent way to start.
The SR20DET engine under the hood has been Fast and Furious’d to the gills with overnight parts from Japan and probably makes a gazillionty and five horsepower. The builder/seller claims to have spent $100k on the car, so this is your chance to buy it for pennies on the dollar.
However, we all known that the simplest answer is NEVER the answer on Daily Turismo (also known as riding Occam’s Razor scooter through a ring of fire)…so…What do you suggest as a $10k car for an amateur drift event? Comments below.
something something something Miata.
This nice Rx-8? You're just going to zing the engine and need a rebuild anyway.

RUN don't walk away from the 4 port ('04-'05 auto trans) RX8's. Transmission is garbage, engine is garbage. I picked up a sub-100k mile example for $4500 2 years ago in running condition.
RX8 is a good choice, just get the 6-spd (manual) 6 port engine w/LSD. Those can typically be found for under $5k in "runs but won't hot-start" condition.
Funny, I was thinking first gen RX-7. This one already has a 13B. With a straight pipe you will at least be the loudest and have awesome backfires…
If you keep it cool, it can't help but go sideways especially when the turbo spools up
5.3 Vortec S10 Turbo
A little more moderate and manual:
351w Ranger
A 400ci pony car should go sideways nicely
Quite a Firebird on the hood
Probably an AE86 powered by a turbo'd F20C… in Panda paint scheme of course.
Would you get a Fujiwara Tofu Ten decal for the side
I'm going with this. No one wants them anymore plus this has a LS1 and 6speed.
3K left over to spend on strippers.
mullet
hot damn, I finally hot linked. Not totally brain dead yet
LSI 944
Occams Razor Scooter? Tough crowd.or way too serious. I'll take the scooter for a hundred.
I would suggest this:

Or any other cheap RWD american car. it would be cheap to buy and repair if (when) you crash it. You can use the money saved on buying the car to upgrade its suspension/chassis.
