Kabrio Sportlich-Leicht: 1998 Mercedes SL500

While most parts of North America are begrudging digging out of snow piles and cuddling the stove to stay warm, car nuts dream of sunny summer days and endless cruising in a drop-top sports car.  There is no better time to scoop up a handsome specimen at discount pricing than during the perils of winter weather mayhem.  When the better half wants that warm & dry parking spot in the garage someone is going to loose.  Find this 1998 Mercedes SL500 for sale near San Francisco, CA for $4,990 via craigslist.

Pictures are grainy but this example looks to be in very good condition overall.  Hagerty pegs a #3 car at 10K for valuation purposes, and a #2 at 17K.  Barring any serious undisclosed issues this example probably falls somewhere in between the two given the 125K mileage claim.  The seller’s ad is skimpy on details but he makes bold statements about the condition being top notch.  The interior looks near new and well preserved for a sun-soaking drop top.

Black over black suits these cars and adds to the boldness of the SL model.  Power comes courtesy of a 5.0L 315 HP V8 via a 5-speed automatic transmission for effortless cruising.

Wheels, trim, and lights all appear in excellent condition.  If the seller is genuine someone is going to get a nice MB convertible for chump change.

If you have the space to store this until spring arrives…or your just one of those lucky SOB’s who lives somewhere warm enough to use this car year round…this just might be the best New Year’s resolution ever!

While officially only 8 days into winter, Glenn is already sick of shoveling snow and yearns to be behind the wheel of a classic in warmer weather.
