Forbidden Fruit: 1996 BMW 725d E38

The E38 generation BMW 7-series was the pinnacle of executive luxury in the mid 1990s and you might think you’ve got the rarest if you get the M73 V12 with a long wheelbase in the 750il. But if you really want to join the “what is that” club, you should get a 725d (or 725tds) with a manual gearbox. What is that? It is a 2.5 liter turbodiesel straight-6 with 141 horsepower and a shift-it-yourself gearbox. Winner. Just don’t expect to drive it in places like California where you could own a Dodge truck with black-smoke-spewing Cummins diesel, but you can’t own a small displacement passenger car. Find this 1996 BMW 725d offered for $16,000 in Lakeland, FL via craigslist. Tip from Cory.

Oh! Hm. I looked for years for one of these and basically gave up. The nine people who have them won’t sell. Find me one over here.
