I’ve known a number of people who were strangely obsessed with the E38 7-series. It is probably something to do with the fact that it was the last of stately styled BMWs before Chris Bangle wreaked havoc on BMW’s design style for years. Anyway, a manual gearbox wasn’t available n the USDM E38 7-series, the […]
The BMW 7-series was the pinnacle of executive luxury in the mid 1990s and the boss of bosses would get the M73 V12 with a long wheelbase in the 750il. Today these cars are depreciated and cheap because maintenance is expensive and modern luxury cars are much more luxurious — but today’s example has a staggering 213k miles on the odometer and shows no signs of giving up yet. Find this 1996 BMW 750il offered for $5,500 in Long Beach, CA via craigslist.
Most of the modified/custom cars out on the street are poorly built piles of Pep Boys junk, but this next car is an example of when a car enthusiast takes the original OEM design and improves it with a few subtle alterations taken from other models from the same OEM. I call this OEM+. A manual gearbox wasn’t available in the USDM E38 7-series, the last 7 with a stick was the E32 735i. The central element of this custom is the 6-speed manual from an M5 mated to a limited slip diff, but the builder focused on the interior with a slick M5 gauge cluster install and an OEM style radio nav system. It is shockingly well done. Find this 2001 BMW 740iL 6-Speed offered for $7,995 in Wareham, MA via craigslist. Tip from Cory.
To quote one of my favorite podcaster/medical experts (Peter Attia); I’m giving up drinking for a month. Whoops, bad punctuation; I’m giving up. Drinking for a month. Anyway, the COVID-19 thing has gotten me a little stir crazy because I’m cooped up inside with a wife and three kids, but that doesn’t mean I can’t […]
If you’ve ever driven a BMW inline-6 with a few miles on the odo (and I have…do regularly, in fact) you typically wince every time you turn the key and hope that high revving beast will turn over and do its thing without something expensive going kablooee. Knock on Bavarian hardwood, it’ll start each time…and […]
The big boy E38 BMW seems to get better and better looking with age. These pre-Bangle designed cars were the last classically designed sedans that have excellent proportions. The USA 7 series never came with a manual, but today’s feature has had a 6 speed installed from a E39 540i sport. The listing mentions some […]
I know it is late Wednesday evening…but that doesn’t mean there isn’t time for a quick Mid Week Match-Up…because the week is half over and the matching isn’t done yet! This next request is for a guy who, for the sake of anonymity, we will call Dave. Dave needs a car to replace his rusting […]
The E38 BMW 7-series was the last BMW to be totally free of the Bangle styling that cursed covered the cars for a decade or so. Additionally the E38 was the last of the 7-series to come with a manual gearbox, but only in some markets….which I believe the USA wasn’t included. Find this 2001 BMW […]
