DT Trip Report: 2019 Rolex Monterey Historics

It doesn’t matter what they call it…the Monterey Historics, the Rolex Motorsports Reunion, WeatherTech Raceway Historic Racing, the Laguna Seca Monster Jam or the Bay Area Histrionics — this is the ultimate car show on the West Coast.  It starts with the dirt parking lot, that is a ridiculous collection of million dollar exotics and classics parked on mole hills, and continues to the track that is alive with the sounds of classic combustion.  See the full photo album here.

The race itself might not be the most competitive you’ll ever see (most of the drivers are paid professionals who are told to NOT wreck the priceless piece of art, or terrible owner/drivers who try and keep the skid marks to a minimum) but the sound of these beasts alive on a track is something that EVERY car nut should hear at least once in his/her life.

You can spend your entire time wandering around the pits which are open to anyone who purchases a ticket to the event and wants to see some of these cars up close and personal.

This 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6 was driven around the track by Gunnar Jeannette and it sounded awesome.

The number 5 Coca Cola themed 1985 Porsche 962 was driven with fire spitting downshifts by Lee Giannone.

A local (Pebble Beach, CA) entry was a 1978 Chevron B36 driven by Tom Minnich.

This 1966 Shelby GT350 was a very fast entry into the 4B group of 1961-1966 GT cars over 2.5 liters.

The #49 entry into the 1B group (GT cars 1955-1962) was a 1961 Porsche Arbarth Carrera drive by Ranson Webster.

A mechanic works on his Lotus 7.

This 1985 Argo JM19 sounded incredible with its shrieking 1.3 liters of turbo rotary power waking the dead for miles around.

The logo for the S-Car-Go Racing Team out of Fort Lauderdale, FL looks awesome.
