Behrens Convertible: 1963 Volkswagen Beetle

A vast contingent of Beetle based kit cars are funny looking things with dumpy proportions and style decisions that betray the rear-engine origins. Todays next Beetle based thing, however, is a breed of a different kind. It has a long front hood section that wouldn’t be bad by itself, but the aero head rest elements lead to a back end that is unquestionably atrocious. The other of the 2 kits made was still in kit form back in 2015, so perhaps you could salvage the rear end by not installing 60s Chevy lights. Find this 1963 Volkswagen Beetle Behrens offered for $24000CAD ($18717 USD) in Nanaimo, BC, Canada via faceflag parkingbook.

Awkward in every way, but equally intriguing. It reminds me of the stuff that came out of the Barris brothers’ shop back in the day. For that reason, I think I like it. Definitely a custom ’60s vibe. That windshield looks like it was pulled from an early Corvette or E-type.
Don’t get me wrong though… it’s still kinda ugly.
Definitely has an illegitimate child of the Batmobile vibe going.
It looks like something The Penguin would drive.
As ugly cars go, this is kind of charming. Leave the head fairings home and it would be a bit more charming and a bit less ugly. I suspect that most of the 21st century road driven unexpected fatality scenarios wouldn’t really be mitigated by roll hoops anyway.
So ,
lose the head fairing toneau cover
Shave the wheel well lips
Move the turn signals off of the fender tops into the headlight buckets.
Toss the wheel covers for some chrome big 5 vw rims
Lose the 65 chevy tail lights or don’t depending on how you feel about Elvas
That would be pretty nice
I agree. Also, big fan of Elvas… both his music and his movies.
