5k: A Pair of 1987 Renault GTAs

The Renault Alliance was a Kenosha, WI assembled pile of excrement re-badged Renault 9 pieces built for the US Market to be sold by AMC.  In 1986 AMC released the Renault GTA (for the 1987 model year), a performance version of the Alliance that included a unique set of fender skirts, external GTA badges, 15-inch wheels, suspension parts and a 2.0 liter inline-4 mated to a 5-speed transmission.  We don’t often get GTA tips in our mailbox, but yesterday two came in within a few hours of each other…so…why not feature them both and let our readers pick the best?  Find this 1987 Renault GTA with blacked out grill offered for $2,750 located in Highland, CA and this 1987 Renault GTA offered for $4,000 in Burlington, WI both via craigslist. Tips from Fueltruck and Andy L respectively.

Picking your favorite GTA is going to be tricky because both of these models are white, both look in decent shape, but the cheap one in Highland might have 120k miles more than a possible 58k mile example located near the factory in Kenosha, WI.

The 185k mile example with blacked out grill has no A/C and is missing a speedo cable, but otherwise is a decent driver.  The 2.0 liter inline-4 was good for 95 horsepower when new and would propel the front drive GTA from 0 to 60mph in 10 seconds when new.  Not exactly fast, but it is no Renault Caravelle.

The slightly more expensive GTA is offered with stock grill and surround and more importantly, is listed with only 58k miles on the odometer…but the seller does use the term “The odometer shows 58,000 miles undocumented.”  Presumably this means that any old receipts, tire invoices, etc don’t support the 58k mile claim or the odometer has been smuggled across the border by a mule named Pepe and is currently lobbying congress for immunity.

Which one would you pick?  Comments below:
