5k: 4-Speeds, All Class: 1980 Mercedes-Benz 280SL R107

The Mercedes-Benz R107 series roadster/coupes were sold from 1971 through 1989.  This remarkably long production life is credited to the graceful design and mechanical robustness that gave the cars of a great reputation and kept buyers returning to the showroom each year without the need for drastic changes.  The market for these cars is good right now for buyers and should start to pick up right around the time we are all riding around in driverless electric hovering google tubes and gasoline is only sold in small jugs at specialty shops.  Enjoy the gasoline while you can by picking up this 1980 Mercedes-Benz 280SL R107 offered for $5500 in Troutdale, OR via craigslist.  Tip from Alex V.

The Mercedes R107 relied heavily on chassis components borrowed from the W114 E-Class and engines from the W116 S-Class, but it offers classy open top motoring for next to nothing.  This one looks nice from a few feet away, but shows signs of its 122k miles.  One of the photos shows some ickyness above the chrome door trim, but it could just be dirt or an artifact in the pics.

Although you could get an R107 is powered by a number of small and big V8s, it seems more in line with Mercedes fabulous history of inline-6 engines (300 SL Gullwing!) to have the 2.8 liter inline-6 show in this one.  Expect 182 horsepower and 176 ft-lbs of torque mated to the rarely seen but highly desirable 4-speed manual.

The interior of this R107 has taken a beating from the years of sun, but it is rare to see a Mercedes of this vintage with a steering wheel that doesn’t look like the surface of the moon.  The XL pizza sized tillers were covered from the factory with a strange rubber/plastic amalgam that seems to always be deteriorated but never completely destroyed.

The chrome wheelarch tack on bits and cheap 5-spoke wheels need to be binned, stat – and this seems to be a gray-market Euro import with some rust bubbles forming – but when was the last time you saw a manual trans R107 for sale in any condition?
