5k: 1974 Pontiac GrandAm Sedan 4-spd

“The mid-sized Pontiac with Foreign Intrigue … American Ingenunity” reads the ad brochure from the Pontiac dealers in 1974…the only thing foreign in this car is any hint of aesthetic appeal – but we are intrigued.  This 1974 Pontiac Grand Am 4door with 4 speed manual transmission is available for sale in El Paso, Texas for $5000 buy-it-now on ebay.

First we need to address the lime green elephant in the room…this thing is ugly.  U-G-L-Y, you ain’t got no alibi; Fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down;  When it was born the doctor slapped his Momma…etc etc.  This car has never been picked first to be on a baseball, basketball or butts-up team.  But with that said and out of the way, it is a unique car; you certainly don’t see many of them driving around…always a plus in our book.

This Grand Am is powered by a 6.5 liter 4bbl Pontiac boat-anchor V8 putting out a weazy 230 horsepower and something like 10,000 ft-lbs of torque.  This is one of those cases where the replacement for displacement is: buying a proper set of cams/intake/exhaust.  But as-is, this engine should be good for doing supreme burnouts with the 4 speed manual trans equipped to an unspecified rear end.

Inside the horror continues -lime green with wood accents, apparently the 74s had genuine “African Crossfire Mahogany” on the center console – faux wood on the dash because the mahogany had the tendency to splinter within the first year of ownership.  Wear gloves when driving this car or keep a pair of tweezers handy.

We are just going to say that this car has a rear end that only a mother could love…but that is sort of a disturbing statement…perhaps the better statement is “whoa, check out those groovey tail lights.”

Really – this car is only good if you are James Caan, parole by day, safe-cracker by night and want to do one more big job for the mob before retiring into the sunset.  It would take a bit of a masochist to drive this thing everyday — and with only 3122 Grand Am sedans built in 1974 (we expect most have gone to the crusher) thankfully, most people won’t need to suffer this green monster.  But we think someone will want this thing, is it you?
