3k: Seller Submission: 2001 Volkswagen Jetta TDI
The Jetta is a small family sedan from Volkswagen, basically a large version of the Golf as it shares most major suspension/engine/interior components with the little hatchback. In the cheap/used market the Jetta gets lost in the shuffle between the small/cute Golf/GTi and the larger and cooler Passat with W8 engines and all-wheel-drive…except that the Jetta was first to get turbo diesel injected power for the US market. Find this 2001 Volkswagen Jetta TDI for sale in North Kingstown, RI for $3,500 via craigslist. Seller submission from Art.
The TDI is powered by a 1.9 liter direct injected turbocharged diesel engine that makes 90 horsepower and 155 ft-lbs of torque. The little engine (mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox) is able to last decades and this one with 287k miles on the clock is just getting broken in. See a better cheap commuter? tips@dailyturismo.com
Very high mileage. I know the old school ones used to run past 300k but out of the loop these days. Anyone have an idea?
I drive a 2004, same body but with a more evolved engine putting out 100 hp & 177 lb-ft of torque – famously called the "Pumpe Düse"
Had it since 2009, and I have approx 210K miles on it right now… running beautifully.
Only major repair was a blown turbo @ 160K, but I understand that's usually how long they last. Otherwise, nothing but oil and scheduled maintenance.
I regularly get 42-48 mpg driving normally (70-80 mph highway) and no mods (my car is bog standard).
As far as mileage is concerned, 287K is not high; go on TDIClub.com, guys there have 600K on their cars with no issues, original engines & all. The fact that this car is a 5-speed means that you can drive with peace of mind.
Beautiful cars!
I highly recommend them to anyone having long commutes… the more you drive, the more you save.
Good luck with the sale
