2k: Basic Transportation: 1984 Toyota Celica GT
The last generation of rear-drive Toyota Celica was available from 1981-1985 and for the US market was offered with the trusty 22R inline four. Unfortunately the US didn’t get any of the GT-R or GT-TR versions available in Europe/Japan that were street versions of the crazy WRC Group B monster, but at least you could get one with a 5-speed and they all put power down at the rear. Find this 1984 Toyota Celica GT for sale in Laurel, MD for $2,200. Big thanks to tipper Zach Z.
The 3rd generation Celica is about as simple as you can get when it comes to 80’s Japanese coupes. No fancy active aero, turbochargers or digital dash – just basic fuel injected inline-4 and rear wheel drive. It is a formula only recently found again by a Japanese manufacturer in the current Toyota/Subaru BRZ/FRS.
The Toyota 22R engine is well known in the truck world because it was used/abused in the HiLux Pickup for decades. But the 22R engine wasn’t originally a truck engine, and its grandaddy (the R) was developed in the 50s for Toyota’s Master, Crown and Super passenger sedans. The 22R-E in this Celica is a 2.4 liter SOHC version that puts out 105 horsepower and 137 ft-lbs of torque.

If this was a Corolla of the same year, it would be selling for double the price…
