20k: You Had Me At Clownshoe: 2006 BMW Z4 M Coupe
Tipper Andy L writes to us: Here is a beautiful car that I must admit I have not seen in the wild before. We have all caught glimpses of the “clown-shoe” M coupe around and you can find them on
E-bay rather consistently. It is was a polarizing design that some can’t really handle. Here is the later version of that car and it looks to have a more universal appeal. Like the uber-rare Pontiac Solstice
Coupe, this configuration wears its hard top at least as well as its drop-top sibling wears the canvas. Must be a real hoot with the M engine, too. Find this 2006 BMW Z4 M Coupe here on eBay currently bidding for $7,100 reserve-not-met with $24,125 buy-it-now and 3 days to go located in Grand Forks, ND.
You shouldn’t blame Andy for never seeing a clown shoe E86 M-Coupe (2006-2008) in the wild because production for North America was limited to 1815. Consider the fact* that 1/2 of all BMWs are located in the greater Los Angeles basin, you now have have 900 for the rest of the USA, Canada & Mexico. Odds are you’ll encounter a Yeti riding a Hayabusa before you find a Z4 M-Coupe if you aren’t in a major rich kid mecca like LA.
Under the hood is the fantastic screaming S54 inline-6, that revs to 8000 rpm and punches out a respectable 330 horsepower while making the sound like a thousand scarab beetles being pushed through a gutter downspout. Power is very linear and the chassis is extremely happy to be tossed through the turns.
With 71k miles on the odometer, the interior on this one is very well preserved. Most BMW interiors that are 10 years old show all sorts of signs of leather distress and steering wheel wear – but this one looks great. The 6-speed manual gearbox is the gearbox of choice, because the 6-speed SMG is balky unless you are running at 10/10ths on a track.

*Totally made up.
Fantastic find! I know a current owner of a brown one – yes, in the greater LA area – and I knew of a silver one when I lived in Nashville.
There was another brown one around these parts last summer. But i have not seen another before or after. Since i hate verts with a passion this would be the one i would hunt for.
HA Yeti on a Hayabusa!! That is awesome. Saw one of these just yesterday near Ann Arbor, MI……. hardtop Z4, not rice rocket powered Yeti.
Strange, the seller posted on my local closed BMW group (North Texas) this up that it was for sale, didn't realize it was so far from Texas
As I said ive only seen one of these around these parts. But in a fit of boredom i was looking at the local ads and found a red one with 108k km on it. Only thing i dont like is the light grey on dark grey interior. kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/bedford/2006-bmw-z4-m-only-67-620-miles/1055800861?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true
I see one of these pretty frequently. Not daily, but pretty often. Whenever I want, actually, since I own it. Fun car, that one's pretty clean. The stock brakes will fade on the track, get race pads, enjoy the looks when you pull up next to somebody and you're clearly not the full size bus they were expecting.

Oh man, those bring out my inner teenager faster than practically any modern car can. Looks like an excellent price. Can't say the red does it for me though.

Beautiful and cheap compared to the e92 M3…would expect these to skyrocket in value at some point due to rarity alone.
They are perhaps a better car than the Clown Shoe but they lack the character of the earlier car.
As for BMWs and the Greater Smog Basin – it's my observation (unsupported by any facts) that the big blotch on the map of coastal California roughly from Simi Valley down to maybe Irvine contains only old Toyota minivans and new Bentleys.
There's cheap cars and very expensive cars there but fewer in the upper-mid range than you'd find four hundred miles north.
Clownshoe enthusiasts should love the look of the new Mustang. Not a hatch, but the toe… I mean nose… is perfect.
Yeti no like crotch rocket; he much prefer laid back Harley.
