Do you want a car with 9/10ths the performance of a Lamborghini but without the triple digit service bills? Because in 2005 we finally got a taste of the forbidden fruit known as the Lotus Elise and it was so wonderful that nobody purchased them and by 2011 they were gone from these shores. Find this 2005 Lotus Elise offered for $29,000 near Austin, TX via craigslist. This
post is part of DT’s 2016 Birthday Celebration of 100 cars;
enjoy the ride!
The Lotus Elise was a strange car. It offered the performance and styling of something like a Lambo or Ferrari but at 1/3rd the cost…so the rich douchenozzles who usually buy Ferraris and crash them didn’t buy them (because they weren’t expensive enough) and the car guys who like driving/racing/fun usually buy used/depreciated cars (ahem…) so nobody bought them new. It was a car that was too cheap to be a status symbol, but too expensive to compete with a 10 year old Vette with a blower…so the 189 horsepower 4-cylinder Toyota engine mounted midships in a superb Lotus hydro-formed monocoque was only available from 2005-2011 in the US.
