15k: Fun To Weight Ratio: 1976 Porsche 911 S Targa

The classic Porsche 911 needs no introduction. The ultimate descendent of the VW Beetle has become a icon in its own right.  The prices for the early classic rear engined examples have skyrocketed to ridiculously inflated numbers, but if you are patient you can find a deal once in a blue moon.  Find this 1976 Porsche 911 S Targa offered for $16,000 in Longview, TX via craigslist.

Depending on who you talk to, the Targa is either the worst piece of engineering since the Hindenburg, with the torsional rigidity of a Twizzler, or the best way to get open air motoring with wet weather capabilities.  No matter which camp you fall into, this one looks in good shape, especially for the asking price.

The Porsche is powered by an aircooled 2.7 liter flat-6 pushing out 163 horsepower and 173 ft-lbs of torque.  Power goes to a 5-speed manual gearbox attached to the rear wheels.  The classic 911’s recipe for fun motoring is to be simple and lightweight.

Inside the 911 is almost indistinguishable from any other 911 built from 1964 to 1997, which is to say that it looks like a great place for a drive.
