10k: Targa Acquired: 1982 Porsche 911 SC Targa

Out of all Porsche 911s, the 1978-1983 SC is the most likely to be featured on the pages of this website because examples can still be found for a decent price.  This isn’t to say that the 911 market isn’t high overall (especially perplexing is the early 911 2.0 prices as they are some of the least useable and most delicate 911s, but command Ferrari prices…) but while 993 are hard to find under $30k, 964 under $20k, you can occasionally get an SC for $10k that isn’t a pile of rusty junk.  Find this 1982 Porsche 911 SC Targa in West Mifflin, PA for $10,200 via racingjunk.com.  Tip from Matt S.

The categorization of this 911 as ‘racing junk’ brings to mind a famous quote from John Kennedy Toole’s masterpiece A Confederacy of Dunces, in which the following conversation takes place inside the “Night of Joy” saloon:

“Hey, you a junkie?” the boy called to Jones. “You look like a junkie to me.”
“You be lookin pretty junky with a Night of Joy broom stickin out your ass,” Jones said very slowly. “Night of Joy broom old, they good and splintery.”

So before you dismiss this Targa as junk, keep in mind that the owner might threaten you with the human popsicle treatment, and remember the ‘tongue-in-cheek’ nature of the racingjunk.com website.

Not much detail is included in the ad, but we can tell it has a dark red interior and looks in excellent shape inside and out.  With luck its 180 horsepower 3.0 liter flat-6 has been well maintained and it is mated to a manual transmission (I believe an auto was available in this model, and they command significantly less money than the 5-spd).
