The first generation Toyota MR2 was a lightweight 2-seater built from 1984 to 1989 with a small inline-4 engine. The faster version had a small Rootes-type supercharger and made 145 horsepower on a good day. Today’s feature MR2 has a later MR2 turbo engine shoehorned into the rear and makes quite a few additional ponies. Find this 1989 Toyota MR2 2.2l Turbo Swap for sale in Portland, ME currently bidding for $8,700 reserve-not-met with a few hours to go.
This MR2 has 87k miles on the odometer, which is low miles for a 24 year old car, especially one like the MR2 that tends to be a good reliable driver. The black paint still shines and aftermarket wheels actually look good on this car.
The original 1.6 liter 4-banger has been replaced by a 2.2 liter stroked
3SGTE with aftermarket internals and is pumping out 300 horsepower into
a 5-speed manual gearbox. Performance should be excellent and the lightweight MR2 chassis will be very happy with the turbocharged nature of the new engine.
The black interior looks in good shape and the optional leather interior looks very nice. Most Mk1 MR2s we see have some kind of faded cloth, so a nice leather is a surprise.
