10k: Rarewagen: 1966 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 34
The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 14 was built in Germany and sold in the USA from 1955 to 1974, but its planned replacement, the type 34, built from 1962-1969 was never imported to the US market. The US continued to get the old Type 14 Ghia and never got the handsome Type 34 that looks like a cross between a Chevy Corvair and a Lancia Fulvia. The Type 34 Ghia is a good looking two seater, with crisp 60’s styling that is much more modern than the Beetle or Type 14 Ghia. It was unfortunate that the Type 34 was never sold in the US market, as VW would probably had sold many more examples and we’d have more of them on the road today. This one has seen some action in its day (salvage title, some paint repairs needed…), but for the current asking price it does seem to pack a lot of vintage charm for the buck.
The Type 34 Ghia is powered by a 1.6 liter aircooled Type 3 flat-4 that is good for 54 horsepower and 87 ft-lbs of torque. Mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox the Ghia is good for a 90 miles per hour top speed and will keep pace with modern traffic if you keep it floored.
This 34 looks to be a project on the inside and out, but it could be driven as-is while restoration is contemplated and executed.

Because I typically ignore words and shoot straight for the pictures, I assumed this was a Corvair that someone grafted a Karmann Ghia nose onto. That is, until I saw dat ass. No Corvair has ever looked that good from behind. The back 1/3 of that car is absolutely gorgeous.
Very nice, and well done DT. I consider myself a car guy from the late 60s and 70s, but I did not know about this model. In fact, just last month I found a Matchbox model of one of these, and I mistook it for an earlier (and prettier) Karmann Ghia. Now I know better.
I imagine the driving experience must be superior to the original Karmann Ghia. Can anyone contribute info?
It is a shame that this particular car seems to have had a tough life. It would warrant a good PPI, and I hope the reserve is a fair bit less than the BIN.
I remember seeing these more frequently than their non importaton status would suggest. Thats kind of odd. I've seen one in Berkeley, and one in Colorado.This was years ago. I guess with those two I've just about seen them all
