10k: 404 Found: 1967 Peugeot 404 Convertible
The Peugeot 404 was available as a convertible with a Pininfarina designed (and coachbuilt) body starting in 1963. When new, it cost as much as a Jaguar E-Type, but offered neither performance or stunning good looks of the now legendary big cat. Almost 50 years later, the 404 Convertible offers an elegant, but reserved, driving experience for the Francophile at a fraction of the cost of an E-type. Find this 1967 Peugeot 404 Convertible here on eBay
currently bidding for $4,550 reserve-not-met with 2 days to go, located in Sarasota, FL.
Comparing the 404 to an E-type is a bit of a low blow, because few cars can compete with the E-type in sheer sex appeal, and the 404 is probably better compared to Italian or German convertibles based on sedans from the same era, perhaps a Mercedes-Benz 230SL W113. Meh…still not a good comparison….
The 404 might have a fancy Pininfarina designed body, but all the greasy bits came from the standard 404 sedan, including the 1.6 liter 4-cylinder carburetor fed engine that puts out something in the 71 horsepower range. Shifting is done via a 4-speed manual gearbox with a column mounted shifter.
The biggest problem (currently reflected in the low bidding) with this 404 is that the car is missing a number of trim items according to the seller, which include: 2 Windshield Wiper Bezel Nuts, 1 Spare Wheel & Tool Kit, 1 Top Radiator Bracket, 1 Front Hose Badge, 1 Front Fender Side Lamp (broken), 1 Gas Cap, 1 Deck Lid Lock, 1 Outside DoorLock, 2 Inside Door Handles and Bezels, 1 Lower Glide Driver’s Side, 2 Pininfarina Insignia Body Placques, , Peugeot 404 Front Hood Insignia,RagTop Bootcover, 3 Pedal Pads. Don’t expect to be able to pickup any of those items at your local Pepboys.

+1! But it was a 403. Still, street cred for you!

No worries. What's a digit….? That's awesome that you're watching Columbo. What a great show.

Err no, it has 5 more than that (76 HP), but the Injection version like I have has a 96 HP engine. Floor shifters were available (mine has that too). The parts this car is missing are available in Europe through Le Club 404 and others. There are more than 60 of these in the USA.
@MikeT – thanks for contributing. These cabriolets have a lot of late 60s chic. Bardot on the Côte d'Azur. Yummmmmm!
I equally love the 404 sedans. Classic shape, great comfort, solid daily performance. They are much under-appreciated cars in North America, and excellent long-distance cruisers. I still regret not pursuing a manual 404 Wagon that was was available in Pennsylvania a few winters ago. It showed up for sale in February, and I was not brave enough to mount a recovery mission.
