These Matadors are actually really stylish. Removing the chunky US-mandated bumpers transforms the car and makes it almost look European from the era. This car is too perfect to modify and, with the color combo, the chrome bumpers actually help the look.
The AMC design department were really pushing the boundaries, similar to what Studebaker did before them. Not every design worked and most were polarizing, but they were bold and interesting. Eventually, they’ll get the recognition they deserve.
AMC cars might be the last hope for us to have affordable American classics when everything from the Big 3 gets completely out of our price range.
Nice to see another fan of the Matador coupe styling – I’ve always thought they got a bad rap. They managed to update the Javelin styling without falling into a lot of the common styling pitfalls from that era.
This car is now in the hands of a Palm Springs, CA dealer and is listed for $19,995. That’s a massive price spike in 4 months.
