Yellow And Ready: 1971 Volvo 142 Turbo

If you find a true boxy Volvo fan they will tell you a few things. First, the 140/240/740 is the best car to have ever been built because it can be a: daily driving sedan, family wagon, race car, drifter, sporty 2-door classic, custom wagon, autocrosser…you get the picture. I’m not convinced that the boxy Volvo is the best car ever, but this next car might be one of the best cars you can buy for less than $2500. Find this 1971 Volvo 142 Turbo offered for $2300 in Albuquerque, NM via craigslist.

1971 Volvo 142S
Safari Yellow, 4 speed manual (M40), rear wheel drive 140 series coupeOriginal B20 4 cylinder has been turbocharged through a custom welded intake manifold that blows through twin Mikuni carbs. Pretty cool entirely analog set-up (no computer / ECM) adds more fuel as boost increases. Head gasket was replaced at time it was boosted. Electric radiator fans. Body color front splitter / lip. Fogs mounted on front bumper. Interior / exterior in fair shape. Very small amounts of rust under paint near rear wheel arches. From what I can tell this car has lived in the desert for a long time, if not always.

I DO NOT HAVE THE KEYS. I have the clean title, and it’s parked at my house in my carport. Car has been parked and locked for about a year and a half (keys are lost). Ran great when it was parked. You will need to arrange a way to get in and start it or tow it out. I just don’t have time to deal with it. I’m asking a lot less than I have in the car and parts for this reason.
I have a bunch of suspension parts, two sets of wheels, and an extra door off a white 140. Was going for a vintage rally car type thing but do not have time anymore and it all needs to go. All suspension parts are NEW and uninstalled, wheels and tires are used. Lots of good stuff from IPD and other Volvo performance part shops:
Bilstein HD shocks, front and rear (4)
SuperPro Front Control Arm Inner Bushing Kit
SuperPro Rear Trailing Arm Front and Rear Bushings
Poly panhard bar, steering linkage, upper control arm, rear torque rod bushings
Idler arm and track bar bushings
Upper and lower ball joints
10mm wheel spacers, 5×108, black anodized (4)
steelies with Blizzak WS60 studless winter tires (on car)
Volvo “Miriam” wheels off a 99-03 Volvo S80. OEM wheels, excellent shape, no tires
$2300 for the car, $3400 for the car with all the parts and wheels, or best offer. The sooner you can get this out of my driveway, the more flexible I am with the price. Again, clean title in hand but NO KEYS. Email or text please. Located near UNM Hospital in ABQ.
Here’s a video of the car from the previous owner:

I love how this one starts off promising, then goes downhill, then plunges over a cliff.
“OK, it looks like it’s in great shape for under $2500.”
“Hmmm, not sure I’d want to tune a multi-carb, blow through turbo.”
“No keys? That’s going to be inconvenient.”
“WHAT, HE CAN’T EVEN GET THE DOOR OPEN?”
Inconvenient, yes… and a bit of a gamble that with keys it will eventually start and run ok, but well worth the asking price for a complete, straight 2-door body. Still a good deal if you go for the whole package with parts.
I’m amazed it has lasted 3 days on the interwebs. My son might drive down from northern Colorado to get it if he can figure out transportation.
He’ll likely need transportation both ways. Just sayin…
Where’s your sense of adventure, sir? Bargains require work, risk/reward.
Someone will buy this, re-key it, get it running somewhat well and flip it on BAT for 5-10X. And if they are smart, have a hell of a fun time doing it (probably not though, they’ll be a joyless, bargain hoovering flipper who only exists to crush dreams and increase sales prices for real enthusiasts)
Aaaaaaaand it sold to a flipper, or someone that got it running and realized what a mess it is.
