Tempo Superleggera: 1989 Ford Tempo Coupe GL

This next car comes as a tip from Matt V who writes: Today’s Edition of “I never knew they came in a Coupe”…aka Tempo Superleggera. Yes, the Tempo did indeed come in a shhhhporty two-door version and a manual gearbox. It looks like a 3/5th scale ninth generation Thunderbird. Find this 1989 Ford Tempo Coupe GL offered for $1800 in San Francisco, CA via craigslist.

Cool retro Tempo GL coupe. 250K miles, 5-speed manual transmission.

Clean title. Registered til March 2022, and I’ll smog it for the buyer.

Simple and reliable daily transportation. New battery, good brakes and clutch, recent tires. Ready to roll.

I got this as an around-town car from an SFO aviation mechanic who inherited it from his grandmother, and he did a lot rebuilding. He removed the A/C in the process. Engine runs smooth, clutch grips firmly, shocks and suspension are solid. Excellent highway cruiser, and it’s set up with a tow hook, the mechanic used it to tow an ATV.

Body is straight, interior is decent with the exception of the cracked dashboard. Power locks and trunk release, so you could wire it for a remote key fob. Wind-up windows.

Big benefit of the Tempo is many common parts with other Fords, which makes DIY repairs easy and dirt-cheap. Also no timing belt to change, instead the engine turns on a timing chain.

It’s been terrific, as it translates a comfortable-American-car personality into this cheap-to-run compact coupe. Selling because I’m a little too tall for its low roof.

$1,800 FIRM, no negotiations, don’t waste your time. Located in the Castro in SF. Happy New Year!
