Steak ‘n’ Shake: 1938 Chevrolet Master Truck 1.5 Ton
Six large doesn’t buy much in the world of pre-war vehicles, maybe you can get a pile of parts or something you’d never want to drive…or so I thought. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled on this 1938 Chevrolet Truck 1.5 Ton offered for $6,000 in Meridian, OR via craigslist.
This car is described by the seller as a “Solid Rust Free Truck” and is powered by a 270 cubic inch GMC engine and 4-speed gearbox. It runs/drives and looks much better than you’d expect for the asking price, but there is some work needed on the brakes and lights.

Wow, that looks like a bargain! Would the 270 and a four speed be sort of period-correct (or might they be original?)?. Oregon to Ontario would be long drive with dodgy brakes…. On the plus side, old stake-bed trucks are some of the few classics that my wife actually likes. "Honey, look what I found…" he said innocently, not knowing if the predator was likely to pounce…
Good to see you back commenting, Bobinott.
The 1st gear in this is probably a granny gear. 2nd thru 4th used in normal driving. This truck has some needs but very straight forward and many repro parts available.
