Sport Fishin’: 2015 Bauer Catfish

I guess one could make the case that the NA and NB series Miata has become the Beetle replacement when it comes to platforms for kit cars.  Not being a pre-world war two wagen fur der Deutsche volk with the engine in the wrong place gives it the advantage of sireing kit cars that you might actually want to own.   Find this 2015 Bauer Catfish for sale in Monroe, WA for $20,000 via craigslist.

The Baur Catfish is a drivetrain from a first or second generation (NA or NB) Miata stuffed into a spaceframe clothed in a fiberglass body.  It loses about 650 lbs from its Miata donor, so figure about 1,500 lbs.  You can also bolt most performance Miata goodies from suppliers like Flyin’ Miata and Goodwin Racing.  This Catfish is powered by a supercharged, intercooled 1.8 said to be good for 250hp.  The seller says “you can spin the tires with just a blip of the throttle“.

Inside the sea of RED you will find Sparco Sprint seats and 4 points.  The engine is also controled by a SDS control unit with a stand alone interface on the tran tunnel.  This way your laptop won’t rocket into space out on the track.

The seller also says “Drives amazingly, at least when its not raining due to the lack of roof”  I’m also guessing it lacks the robot homing pidgeon too.
