The cheapest BMW 2002s in California are always from the 1976 model year and it isn’t anything to do with the styling or features on the car…but it does have to do with California’s arcane smog laws. You see, if a car was born in or before 1975 then you can drive it around with busted piston rings and black smoke pouring out the tailpipe, or swap it to Merlin 1D rocket fueled by liquid oxygen and RP-1. It really doesn’t matter what you do, just pay the fees and you can drive it. BUT, if the car was built in 1976 through 2001, then you have to meet tailpipe emissions PPM limits that are ever tightening in an attempt to remove older cars from the road. I can’t imagine that someone would daily drive a 1976 BMW 2002, but if you want to use this as a weekender in Cali, you gotta get it to pass smog every other year. Good luck.
