Show Me The Money: 2011 Ford Taurus SHO

The original iteration (1989-1991 & 1992-1995) Ford Taurus SHO (Super High Output) was a love letter from the engineers at Ford’s Special Vehicle Team to everyone who wanted to have fun in a sedan. It had a screaming Yamaha V6, a 5-speed manual gearbox, and Conan O’Brien’s seal of approval. In 1996 Ford introduced a V8 SHO that had more O in the SHO, but it lacked the S…because it was only available with a slushbox auto and buyers went elsewhere after 1999. A few years later (in 2010) Ford introduced a new version of the SHO that had a whopping 365 horsepower from a twin-turbo V6 EcoBoost engine and all-wheel-drive…but a 6-speed slushbox auto. I’m not an expert on the 4th gen D3-platform SHO, but I will say that I drove one as a company loaner/beater when they were new. Despite the marketing, it was not a rocket-ship like an E-class AMG, but if you weren’t paying attention you could find yourself in triple digit speeds and hardly notice. The all-wheel-drive lets it squat off the line and it’ll hit 60mph in 5.2 seconds despite the 4400 curb weight (put this thing on weight watchers…please!!). It isn’t an apex carver or something you’d want to take to a trackday, but it does a great impression of what Lincoln claims to build — fast and fun sedans that offer a soothing driving experience at the expense of…well..expense. Don’t expect to get gas mileage above the teens unless you have a really light foot.
