Seller Submission: 1972 BMW 2002

The BMW 2002 shouldn’t need much of an introduction to any car guy (or gal), but if you’ve been living under a rock — let me explain. German styling, good reliability, good handling, rugged 4-cylinder engine, daily driveable classic…all for a decent price. Today’s 2002 is on the high end of the price we’d like to pay, but comes from seller Brian who admits that “she is not a show car, but a fun daily driver!” Prices for these things have jumped up in the past few years, but you can still find them under the DT self imposed $25k price limit. Find this 1972 BMW 2002 in East Lake, CA via craigslist.

Up for sale is my 1972 BMW 2002 (E10) with an upgraded 5 speed Getrag transmission. She runs and drives wonderfully with it’s original M10 engine with an upgraded Weber 32/36 carb. Now this is not a show car, this car is a driver to be enjoyed in the canyons and weekend drives. I drive this car daily to work and everywhere else on the weekends, so mileage will increase.

PRO’S:
SMOG FREE FOREVER! If you are a real car enthusiast and live here in this smog draconian state, this is pure gold!
Getrag 5-speed upgrade means you can cruise at 75 MPH at 3000 RPM all day.
Looks great for a nearly 50 year old car!
Fun to drive and you definitely are not driving a Camry.
All gauges and electrical work as they should.
Mostly stock everything so you can mod it to your hearts content.
CON’s:
Does have rust bubbles under the paint in multiple areas on the car, look at the pictures for references.
Took out front speakers due to them being blown.
Center console needs to be replaced, I have a custom made one in aluminum I will give to new owner if my price is met.
Needs complete new stereo system.
If you are interested in this car, contact me via email and we will go from there. Leave a real phone number (none of that Google fake garbage) and we will talk from there.

In order for you to test drive the car, proof of funds for my full asking price is REQUIRED and a valid Drivers License.
Local sale here in San Diego is preferred, I will not ship the car unless the buyer pays for shipping/logistics and everything plus my full asking price.
Let’s not waste each others time, ask your boss/ wife/ significant other prior to contacting me.
TRADES:
These are the only trades I will consider (NOTHING ELSE), all must have CLEAN TITLES and be in good running and driving condition.
Porsche 911- must be a manual. Any body style.
Porsche Boxster – must be a manual. Any body style.
Corvette C5/C6 ZO6 only- Must be manual and COUPE ONLY.

I had a ratty ’74, that I owned for 8 years. Took me a week or so to get used to the high RPM engine. Buzzing close to 5K around 85-90mph, this engine LOVED to rev, forever, all day long. Also, getting up to highway speeds, it seemed to ‘hunker down’, like it was glued to the road. I had to sell it to buy a house. No regrets, but I do miss that car…. This car, w/ the 5spd won’t be buzzing as much, and a great upgrade. Buy and drive this car, knowing you will get your $$ back if you sell, but more likely more than what you paid…
I remember when this price would get you the absolute best tii and a regular one like this was $5-7K if it was excellent. Times change but my mindset doesn’t. It’s a nice car, but personally I couldn’t justify the purchase when there’s so much else available in this range. I don’t follow the 2002 market anymore, but I can’t help but feel this price shouldn’t include rust issues. But if you can get your asking, more power to you.
I had to sell my 2002 in Aug of 2018 to go towards a house, just before 2002 prices really took off…….You gotta find the ‘next 2002’, now. In my mind, that’s a Honda S2000 or Miata, Integra or (fill in the blank)… I’ll never be able to afford another rust free 2002, but I will be able to afford a Miata NC w/ retractable hardtop in the next few years….
If I pulled up behind this in traffic my first two thoughts would be:
Ohh round taillights!
