Rear Subaru Turbo: 1970 BMW 2002

The BMW 2002 (and 1600) was a compact sports executive car built from 1966 through 1977 on a shortened version of BMW’s “New Class” sedan platform. It used a traditional front inline-engine rear-wheel drive setup with a transmission in the middle…you know, standard stuff for 95% of the vehicles built before it. It worked well, but not well enough for the customizer of this next 2002 who re-engineered this car to have a rear-mounted turbocharged Subaru flat-4 somehow attached to the rear wheels. That “somehow” would likely be via the Subie FWD transaxle still attached to the engine — i.e., take an entire FWD powertrain and mount it in the rear, the same approach many mfrs. took to create affordable rear-mid-engine sports cars such as the Fiat X1/9, Lanica Montecarlo/Scorpion, Pontiac Fiero, Toyota MR2, et al.
Beware the bow tie.
