Pretty Much A C8 Vette: 1984 Pontiac Fiero 2M4

The Pontiac Fiero is considered by many to be a strange blip in the American Automotive landscape…but it is the spirtitual predecessor to today’s brand new Corvette. SAY WHAT?!??! You might consider this blasphemy if you are a Corvette lover or total nonsense if you are a Fieroisti, but think about it for a minute. The Fiero was mid engine. So is a new Corvette. The Fiero has plastic body panels haphazardly bolted to a spaceframe body…same as a C8 Vette. Two seats, yup. But which car is available with a manual gearbox? Victory in the tie breaker goes to the Fiero. Find this 1984 Pontiac Fiero offered for $800 in Glendora, CA via craigslist.

Any Ronald Finger fans here on DT? His multi-year restoration odyssey of essentially the same Fiero is really motivational and quite humorous:

As the owner of a similar but white car I can tell you half the people who own Fieros live to tell Corvette jokes and make memes.
The other half of us are swapping motors and polishing our turds as hard as we can. Mine is getting a K20 that will probably run seconds before WWIII wipes us off the planet.
I’m hoping you document your K20 swap in a Finger-esque fashion. My K20 swapped Honda Insight was more fun than a liter bike.
Engine swap?
You call that an engine swap?
Now this is an engine swap.

I am not, but the guy who is doing a legit build is.

My build is more of the cheapest proof of concept possible. No interior, Honda motor mounts welded to a Fiero subframe, other highly questionable decisions. End goal is 200 wheel HP, around 2,000 pounds on 205 width tires. It weighed 2,700 with an interior and iron duke.
Wait. Did the Corvette ever come with a 4 cylinder option?
I’m thinking not. You’d have to choose between driving or running the AC.
And yet…has anyone ever tried sticking an Iron Duke in a ‘Vette? Seems doable. We’ve seen diesel Corvettes…Vettes on 4WD truck chassis… why not a Corvette with a 90 HP 4 banger?
This one’s interesting : https://www.hagerty.com/media/entertainment/this-vw-powered-corvette-grand-sport-was-built-to-fly-but-not-on-the-strip/
-Stan (who, like some of the other deranged guys here, also owns a Fiero, but sadly, it has a V6…)
It’s certainly wins in the styling department as well – so much cleaner (assuming luggage rack is deleted).
