Murican Mondeo: 1998 Ford Contour SVT

The US market Ford Contour was marketed and sold as a US market version of the European Ford Mondeo, but in truth it only shared a few pieces including the windshield, windows, side mirrors and door handles. Everything else was standard parts bin junk left over from the Tempo or borrowed from the Taurus or Escort. That didn’t stop Ford from making an interesting SVT version that might be mistaken for another 90s domestic piece of junk, but it is a cool car and certainly a bit of a sleeper. Find this 1998 Ford Contour SVT offered for $5,500 in Albuquerque, NM via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

I convinced my buddy to get one of these in the late 90’s. He drove it for 10 years and loved it. It had a cold air intake and sounded the business. The car was a lot of fun and absolute bargain. I want to say they had issues with warped dashes…
Makes me miss my silver 1998 example. Such a great and underrated car – then and now.
I still have scars on my stupid, ape knuckles from quick 2-3 shifts where I punched the daylights out of the radio when I either missed 3rd, or it was slow to engage. The factory head unit lasted about 6 months. After that, I bought an Alpine unit w/a detachable faceplate that I could replace. I went thru 3 or 4 of those before the 3rd gear syncro went out & I offloaded the car.
